Optimized headlines

Lately, I asked people to start adding Web headlines to their articles so that we could use them with the copy that goes online.

The idea behind this is to make it easier for people to find our articles in search engines, such as Google, which play an increasingly important role in driving visitors to our Web site. People search for keywords, and if those keywords are in the headlines of our stories (which are read and indexed by search engines) then we get a visitor.

The point of writing about this again is to say that we’re not the only news organization looking at improving our search engine placement (duh!). The BBC’s news Web site recently made some changes to the way it handles headlines on its Web site. It’s worth reading to hear the BBC’s rationale.
