NYT publishes news of its own economic woes

News today that the New York Times will need to cut 100 newsroom jobs by the end of the year, whether through buyouts or layoffs. A memo to employees from editor Bill Keller (published here) explains the situation.

What’s more, the Times announced this news on its own Media Decoder blog, where Richard Perez-Pena explains that this round of job cuts extends one from last year, when another 100 newsroom jobs were eliminated.

I have to wonder. If we had to cut back in the newsroom, would we be transparent enough to publish news of our own layoffs?
