A QUIET DECEMBER AHEAD OF BUSY NEW YEAR

It’s been a quiet December when it comes to commitments for MSU football, both for high schoolers and JC transfers. More are expected to come in the new year, especially since Rob Ash says he’d like to sign as many as 12 high school players.

As far as I know, just two have orally committed.

When it comes to the three mid-year transfers, Ash is happy with what he’s gotten so far. Linebacker Matt Harris and quarterback Mark Iddins are expected to come here as “ready for primetime players,” while O-lineman Anthony Patterson could serve as a versatile man along the offensive front.

The question is: is Iddins the guy for next season? I’ve heard he was offered a scholarship by San Jose State before saying “yes” to MSU, but the jump from JC to D1 is a big one. Aside from Travis Lulay, who made the transition from high school seem like a piece of cake, most MSU QBs come here with some type of D1 experience.

Or, in the case of Cory Carpenter, they spend a few years learning the system before becoming a starter.

MSU has had good luck turning JC skill players (mostly at running back and receiver) into starters, but at QB, those are untested waters.

We’ll know more about this in the spring, when we actually get to see Iddins and Jordan Rasmussen compete for the job.

Until then, speculation is all we have.
